Recording Member Demographics Within the Architects Climate Action Network
At ACAN, we view the future of the construction industry as more than purely a material or technological question. We recognise the importance that all people have in the shaping of the built environment. In order to make long-term, meaningful change within the industry, our network seeks to focus on transformative collective action that celebrates and empowers people’s varied capabilities, commitments, interests, relationships, and strengths.
In order to actively support and promote equity, diversity and inclusion toward a culture of belonging, ACAN must acknowledge our current membership demographic, critically observing areas of exclusion. This is particularly necessary as ACAN is uniquely positioned within the intersection of the construction industry and climate activism:
There is significant evidence to show that there remain barriers both to entry and progression within the construction industry professions for marginalised groups.
Equally, volunteering within the climate movement is not yet fully inclusive. There remains a number of psychological and physical barriers affecting people’s willingness and ability to volunteer at different points in time.
