Second-Generation Space

(2017)

The Story of 2 St Lucians in East London, Described Through Their Possessions, Home Place and Domestic Practices.

This dissertation questions: How can architectural vocabulary expand to encapsulate the cultural, historical and familial particularities that occur within domestic spaces inhabited by people that have experienced the journey of migration?

"With 36.7% of the London population now born outside of the UK, and immigration at the forefront of global and political conversation, the need for development in architectural vocabulary and understanding to accommodate these millions of people is paramount. While the topic of immigration has been vastly researched across geography, anthropology, urban and cultural studies, from an architectural perspective there remains critical need to acknowledge these spatial intricacies. The investigation of Granny and Grandad's dining room, though a highly personal endeavour, can be read as a microcosm of the metropolitan, multicultural city of London in which cultures collide, adapt, integrate, and merge into the next generation of spaces."
